A great example of Sicilian baroque, Catania is situated at the foot of the volcano Etna.
In 2002 its old town centre and seven municipalities of the nearby Val di Noto were added to the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites.
The city is rich in monuments and sites which are worth a visit:
• The Roman Theatre, the Amphitheatre and the
Thermal Baths.
• The Ursino Castle, which was commissioned by Frederic II and today hosts the
Catania Civic Museum.
• The baroque monuments listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites:
S. Agata Cathedral, the Church of S. Benedetto,
Palazzo degli Elefanti, Palazzo Biscari,
Palazzo Del Toscano and various other historical buildings.
